Memory Quilt
Last year, at this time, Mike and I took off on a trip out East to visit our friend Steve and see the Autumn colors in New England.
It was a very relaxing vacation. We took back roads through small towns and rolling hills.
It got to be a game with us on finding a different adjective for all the colored leaves. It was that beautiful.
I couldn't help but picture a quilt of all the beautiful fall colors, so I set out on a mission to find just the perfect material.
I wanted to make Mike a "Memory Quilt" of our vacation, and now finally one year later it is done.
I admit I finished the top last winter, but I just couldn't figure out the quilting pattern. I am still struggling with this because I know it can make or break a quilt. It dawned on me it was literally right in our back yard. I picked up some leaves from our Oak and Maple trees and made my own template.
Now I don't have to turn on my furnace anytime soon.

Kitchen Invasion
This past 2 days my kitchen has been invaded.
Steve was here from NY for his High School birthday bash (they are all 60) and he volunteered to make the cakes.
He brought his own cake pans (try explaining that at security at the airport) and decorating kit. His first stop, after Portillos, was the grocery store for ingredients for his master pieces and he was ready to take over my kitchen.
"Now Steve , What is the first thing you need to do before baking?"
He didn't have an answer - he also didn't have his new apron on! Every chef needs an apron.
I did not have a problem being his sous chef.
He makes all his cakes from scratch. He started out with chocolate frosting from the can, added cream cheese, powdered sugar , butter and vanilla and I don't know what else, but it made the most delicious frosting EVER. I will have to remember that one.
All I did was butter and flour the pans, wash the dishes, and help locate ingredients he needed and tried to stay out of his way. Very hard for me to do in my own kitchen.
On Thursday he made German Chocolate, Key Lime, and a Carrot cakes.
I am not a cake eater, but I have to admit the kitchen smelled AMAZING!. The carrot cake got my mouth watering. I did try the topping for the German Chocolate. Yummy!
On Friday he started early. I am enjoying my coffee and reading the paper and he is baking in my kitchen before 8 am. 2 fudgy Chocolate Cakes.
One for his party and one for my twin. She LOVES cake and just so happens to have a birthday coming up.
I called and told her there was a surprise for her on my kitchen counter - she shows up with a fork.
Didn't take her long to get a taste and start moaning. We all had a taste. I have to admit I had a piece myself and loved it.
Steve is always welcome at our house, but next time we are baking cookies - Damn it!!!!

Fun Filled Saturday
While Bryan was wrestling with the plumbing in the new addition Mary brought the kids out to spend the day with us and to keep them out of the mess at home.
Both boys love to pick up stick - good thing because our yard was full of them from the storm Friday night. They ran around the yard helping Papa fill his garbage can - several times. The neighbor had a tree fall blocking the road to our house. The township came and opened up the road, but Roger wanted to go see the tree and the big hole in the ground.
I had a surprise for them. I called Sharen and she arranged a trip to the Fire station.
They were very excited!!!
Roger driving the big engine.
Aunt Sharen gave them each a fire hat and stickers. Luke was wearing his sticker and Memaw wore his hat. The boys weren't too interested in their hats at the station, but Roger insisted on wearing his all through lunch.
They took a trip to the bunk room to check out the special clothes.
I have the same picture taken with my older grandkids. Sitting on the back of the truck.
Our next stop was the playground. Mary took our car back to the house to get some sleep and Mike joined me and the boys at the school playground next door to the station. Nothing like getting your exercise chasing kids around a playground for a couple hours. Notice Luke is not in the picture like I thought he was - Nope, he is off running to the swings. It's now official - He is faster than his Memaw at 20 months old.
We took a break for lunch at McDonalds. Now everybody who knows me, knows I do not do McDonalds. There is nothing there I care to eat, but the boys like the happy meals. Things you have to do for the grandkids. The apples were the first things to disappear, then fries, then nuggets.
Back to the house for rest period. I have to admit I put my feet up too.
After naps we took the boys down to "Grandma's creek" for their first walk in the water. They've been to the creek, but this was their first visit wading. The water was too deep for Luke, but he didn't mind at all. We all got wet and had a awesome time floating sticks and leaves and throwing rocks.

They got to run all over the place and ran from truck to boat back to the trucks. Firefighter Arnie let them take the exhaust hose off the truck and hook it back up again. Roger told us he was helping them. They got to meet with a few firefighters and later told Papa that "One was a girl!".
Roger pointed out the tanks "they carry these on their backs". OK, how in the hell does he know that? Mary told me they have a book with firemen in it at home. Roger was fascinated with all the tools on the truck and the big "Tool Room".They took a trip to the bunk room to check out the special clothes.
