Dinners

Things are very different when Mike is not home.
I have to do the laundry. I striped the bed so I had enough for one load. I know poor me, right.
I have yet to run the dishwasher - not enough dirty dishes.
Big difference in the recycle bin. None of Mike's plastic soda bottles. I did take it to the curb this week though. Again, poor me!
I had to run the snow blower down the driveway and shovel the front deck.
One day I went to 2:00pm without saying one word. I finally called Sharen just to talk

One huge difference has been in my cooking.
I really don't mind cooking things that Mike likes. I can usually tweak it a little bit and we both enjoy dinner together.
This week I decided to make all things NOT Mike.
I have made stir fry with just vege's. Though Mike wouldn't eat stir fry, even if it had steak in it. I big thank You to Mary for turning me on to Couscous. I use it instead of rice. Love it!
I made cabbage steaks. Yeah, just cabbage sliced thick with garlic cooked under the broiler. I can't wait to try this on the grill.
With the left over cabbage I made Ya-coo-ma-chee. It's a dish our Aunt Kay used to make. She was Japanese. Kinda like a stir fry with cabbage - I used chicken instead of the standard hamburger. I know my sisters will remember it.
I had sauerkraut with apples. Yup - that's it for the whole dish.
And the one that is a sure thing Mike would NEVER eat. Liver and Onions...
I also loved me some liver and onions leftovers.

Well, Mike is due back tonight.
I better get that Pot roast with carrots and potatoes in the crock pot.

He Gone!

So Mike is in NY helping a friend. He almost didn't make it - Seriously if you don't have to fly JetBlue don't - What a nightmare.
On Tuesday after sitting on the plane for 5 hours, not because of the weather, but because some idiot baggage handler broke the cargo door. Then they had to wait for an engineer to take a look at it FROM BRAZIL. Then the flight crew was past their hours allotted. They cancelled the flight.
Now, because of the weather, he couldn't get out until Wednesday morning at 6:30am and then he had to take a connecting flight thru Boston. UGH!
All this after a 1.5 hour car trip to the airport in heavy traffic. Needless to say Mike was done.
Thankfully, I was at Bryan and Mary playing with Roger, who was home from daycare with a fever, so I was close to the airport and picked Mike up.

Round 2. Wednesday morning, we are up and on the road at 4:30 with fingers crossed everything was on time. Turns out the same plane was still at the gate so Mike hopped on that direct flight to JFK in time to get to the hospital.
Steve's surgery went well and Mike called to tell me he got him home without a hitch.

Whew! OK - now what do I want to do....
There is no wine in the house - so that's out.
The hot tub is broke - so that's out.
It's way to frickin cold to go out (though I haven't ruled out a trip to JoAnnes).

I could clean the closets. The frig could use a cleaning. I could get all the paper work ready for taxes.
OR I could spend my time quilting.
Yeah, that sounds like a plan.

Remember When????

Back in 1967...
We had a terrible ice storm and lost power in the house. We huddled in the basement. Mom cooked on the old gas stove down there and we used it for heat. We played cards and board games and fixed puzzles. We put more clothes on to go TO bed.

Back in 1979...
The snow fell for days. Bryan was just barely 2. He climbed the huge snow drift onto the garage roof. I tired to get to him, but kept falling IN the drift. Guess I was to heavy. He eventually jumped down into my arms and we rolled down the drift.

Back in 1985...
When temperatures didn't get above 0 for 3 days.
I went on a snowmobile trip with the girls I worked with, to come home to a broken furnace and frozen pipes. I took Bryan over to his Father's house. The furnace guy came, but had to order a part. I spent the next few days alone, cold, with a space heater directed at the pipes under my sink in the kitchen.

Back in 2014...
When it snowed so much that Mike went out a few times to blow out the driveway.
And the temperature was still -14 at 11:00am WITH the sun shining.
One things is for sure we won't forget this winter anytime soon - if ever!
